Faculty Councils

Every faculty at Maastricht University has its own Faculty Council. These councils act as a bridge between the faculties and the University Council, providing input on faculty affairs and serving as advisory bodies to the Faculty Boards and the dean.

The Faculty Councils are made up of elected members from the academic staff, support staff and student body. Staff members typically serve for two years, while student representatives are elected for a one-year term.

The responsibilities of the Faculty Councils include:

  • Having the authority to approve or reject faculty policies, parts of the Education and Examination Regulations (EER), and guidelines concerning education, research and internationalisation;
  • Providing advice on key issues such as the appointment of professors and the allocation of the faculty’s financial resources.

If you are a member of the Faculty Council, you are expected to attend the monthly plenary meetings, which are held jointly with the Faculty Council and the Faculty Board. In addition, some faculties offer the opportunity to participate in subcommittees. The workload for these subcommittees varies depending on the nature of your involvement.

Typically, during the week of the plenary meeting, there is also a pre-meeting (and occasionally even a pre-pre-meeting). These meetings take place without the Faculty Board and are intended to prepare for the plenary session. They provide a space to align on discussion topics in advance, ensuring that no one is caught off guard during the main meeting.

Almost all Faculty Councils at Maastricht University include one or more representatives from DOPE. Below is an overview of the current representation of DOPE members within the various Faculty Councils.
